Schizophrenia Paranoia in The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

I.               Introduction
The Tale-Tell Heart is one of the popular short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe and was first published in January of 1843. It is a first point of view story which the narrator as the main character. This story tells about the narrator assured his sanity by telling what had happened to him. He killed his master, the old man, because he disliked his big eyes. Every midnight, he came to the old man’s room and shot his eyes with the lantern. However, the old man did not awake. One night, he tried to come to the old man’s room. The old man awakened because of his presence. At that time, the narrator heard “A low, dull, quick sound”, considered as the heart beating, which later became so strong that the neighbor might hear that as well. The old man screamed. It forced the narrator to kill him, mutilated the corpse, and put it under the wood floor.
Hearing the shrieks, one of the neighbors reported that to the police. Shortly afterward, the police came and investigated the whole place. They found nothing related to the shrieks. At that time, the narrator found the heart beating sound became louder. He assured the police about the sound. However it was only in the narrator’s mind. This made the police reinvestigated the room. The story ended by the confession of the narrator’s horrible deed. (
By using the psychoanalytic criticism, the writer chose to analyze the main character. This story was chosen to be analyzed using the Psychoanalytic Criticism because the mental disorder in this short story can be clearly seen.
II.            Objective
Exploring the short story using psychoanalysis as the approach to analyze literary work, the writer expects to discover the mental disorder that occurs in the main character of the story by equalizing the symptoms and the story.
III.          Approach
Psychoanalysis is one of the branches in psychological study that learns about the personality of human. This theory of personality was invented by Austrian neurologist, Sigmund Freud, in late 19th century. In the beginning, psychoanalytic was used as a method of psychotherapy to cure mental disorder by provoking the patients to tell their past memories and feeling (Feist, 2008: 16).
It is slightly different with psychoanalytic criticism. The concern of this criticism is the work of literature as the expression of psychological condition and the personality structure of the author. However, Psychoanalysis gives space to analyze the psychological unconsciousness of the author, the psychological matter from the reader, and also the character in the work (Abrams 1999: 248).
In psychoanalysis, there is a psychological strategy, defense mechanism, which is brought into the unconscious mind to deny or manipulate the reality. Defense mechanism aims to protect the mind or ego from the anxiety or social sanction or cover the mind from something that someone cannot confront with. According to Freud via Feist, there are eight types of defense mechanisms, repression, reaction formation, displacement, fixation, regression, projection, introjections, and sublimation. However, the excessive application of it will lead those mechanisms to compulsive, repetitive, and neurotic behavior (Feist, 2008: 39-44).
The focus in this paper is on the projection. It is defined as to feel other people’s feelings or encouragements, where in fact it is only in the unconsciousness. Projection occurs when the thoughts are rejected from the consciousness into unconscious. The exaggerate use of projection will lead into the mental disorder, schizophrenia paranoia. It is a mental disorder indicated with strong delusion in the form of the feeling of being persecuted by other people (Feist, 2008: 42).
According to Maslim in his book Diagnosis of Mental Disorder, mental disorder is defined as a clinically significant behavior or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in individual and is associated with the distress or disability. This is the basis indicating that schizophrenia paranoia as one of the mental disorder.
There are several symptoms that might happen in the patient’s psychology. The first symptom is delusion. It is the thing which exists in the mind but does not exist in reality. The second symptom is hallucination. The unreal sensory experience occurs in the patient’s mind; in this case the sensory is the auditory of the narrator. The third is catatonic behavior. This is the symptom in which the patient will show their uneasiness (Maslim, 2001: 46-48)
IV.              Analysis
More specific than mental disorder, the narrator is judged as the patient of schizophrenia paranoia. To determine the mental disorder in the story, there is, leastwise, one form of schizophrenia paranoia diagnosis that has to be met by the statements in the story.
1.         Delusion
In the story, there are some delusions that existed in the narrator’s mind. Evidences in the narrator deed are exaggerated. However, the exaggeration is also the evidence of the mental disorder.
And now a new anxiety seized me --the sound would be heard by a neighbour!” – This is the quotation in the part where the narrator came into the old man’s room. He assured that he heard a strange sound considered as the heart beat of the old man and it was loud for him. He accused that the sound was too loud that even the neighbor might be able to hear it. This is considered as the delusion because it only exists in the narrator mind and is impossible in the reality that heart beat can be loudly heard, especially by his neighbor, without using a special device to hear the inside part of human body.
It grew louder --louder --louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! --no, no! They heard! --they suspected! --they knew! --they were making a mockery of my horror!-this I thought, and this I think.” – This is the part when the narrator and the police were having chat in the room. The narrator felt the heart beat sound of the late old man was getting louder. He believed that the police should have heard this too but they pretended not to show it, because the narrator thought that they were mocking him. This is considered as the delusion of the narrator. His thought about the police does not exist in the reality considering the activity of the police that was depicted by the narrator. Normally, when people heard a strange noise that they have not heard before, they would not act pleasantly.
2.      Hallucination     `
“There came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man's heart – This quotation is taken when the narrator came to the old man’s room. He believed that the sound he heard that clear was the heart beat of the old man. This hallucination came to the mind of the narrator and could not be proved as in reality. None of heart beat that can be heard by normal person without using a special device to hear human heart beat.
And now at the dead hour of the night, amid the dreadful silence of that old house, so strange a noise as this excited me to uncontrollable terror.” – This narration is in the part when the narrator came into the old man’s room. He again believed that he heard a strange noise that excited him to the terror. This is considered as the hallucination considering that it is impossible that in a dreadful silence house to hear a noise.
Yet the sound increased --and what could I do? It was a low, dull, quick sound --much such a sound as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. –This is the same statement repeated as in the end part of the story.
“- but the noise steadily increased” – This short phrase is repeated four times in the last paragraph of the story. This hallucination came into the mind of the narrator. This made him believe that the noise, old man’s heart beat, clearly could be clearly heard.
3.      Catatonic Behavior
I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations; but the noise steadily increased. Why would they not be gone? I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men --but the noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamed --I raved --I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased.” – These are the evidence of the uneasy actions done by the narrator. This quotation is in the last paragraph of the short story. The narrator felt bothered by the strange noise that haunting him. He first aroused and acted normal even the noise still existed. A while later, the narrator became more uneasy. It is considered by his statement telling that he paced to the floor and fro. His uneasiness worsened as he told that he swung and greated the chair.

V.                 Conclusion
This short story tells about a man that killed his master because he hated his eyes. After killing him, he was haunted by his master’s heart beat sound. This made him confess his horrible deed to the police.
By using psychoanalysis as the approach to analyze the work, the reader might be able to find the mental disorder in it. As in defense mechanism, the exaggerate use will lead to the mental disorder. One of the mental disorders in psychoanalysis is schizophrenia. These symptoms have similarity with the deed of the main character in The Tell-Tale Heart.
The first symptom is the delusion. There are some statements uttered by the narrator as the main character which are considered as the delusion, such as when the narrator heard the heart beat and believed that everybody would hear that too. The second symptom is hallucination. The narrator hallucinated that he had heard his master’s sound of heart beat. And the last symptom is catatonic behavior. This can be seen as written in the last paragraph of the story. As the heart beat sound getting louder, he became more uneasy and did inappropriate actions.

Food Experience: part 3

Balikpapan is a small city in East Borneo, Indonesia. Eventhough it's small, it is more like a miniature of Indonesia. You might call this city as Small Indonesia. There are so many representative of all ethnic in Indonesia, from Sumatra to Irian Jaya. That is why, you will easily find restaurants which will serve you food from all over Indonesia.
Well, in my last holiday, I school in Yogyakarta so I come back to my hometown in my day free, I had been confused to find a restaurant which serves International food. After looking around in the malls, just so you know: Balikpapan has five big malls, I found Pasta Cielo, located in E-walk Balikpapan, level 2. There are soooooooo many pasta and other Italian food. The first time I came to this restaurant, I saw beautiful vintage decoration, especially the sofas. It's recommended, I think, for family and friend time.

I ordered Sausage Cream Fettuccine and fresh Lychee Tea. Trust me, you won't regret it! The pasta's taste is so adorable. Love it! It's not only pasta that served, there are cheese rice, soups, and other yummy ones. The price rate is between IDR 25-70k. No worry about the place. It gives you free WiFi and also has cozy place.

I am sometimes counting down my life time. I feel like, it's near. so close. It is not a happy one, nor sad. It's plain. Well, that's not the matter.
What becomes hard for me is I don't even prepare for it. I have not given something to my society, I have not even been their pride. I didn't forget that. I was just too busy with those shity things.
as you know, I will never forget my words. so I promise my deepest heart, I promise to my future, I promise to my future life, there in God's peace house, to be something, to be their pride.
or you can kill me, ignore me, hurting me, do what you want to me.
Never had I been in love this deep.
Never had I been happy with friends.
Never had I felt this kind of feeling before.
Never had I been touched by a life-lasting feeling.

Short Poem:

Only Me

People around call me Princess.
'cause I'm full of Perfectness.
but once, I tell them Honestly,
They'll notice.
I'm full of weirdness.

Society keeps away from me.
because they think I am so Rowdy.
but once, I tell them Honestly,
They'll notice.
How kind I am like an Angel.

My teachers say that I am brainy.
Because, I can finish all my duty.
but once, I tell them Honestly,
They'll notice.
I am still Clumsy and Dorky.

My friends seem to enjoy being around me.
'cause they consider me as friendly.
but once, I tell them Honestly,
They'll notice.
all along, I feel so lonely.

 People around call me Princess.
Society keeps away from me.
My teachers say that I am brainy.
and my friends seem to enjoy being around me.
but once, I tell them Honestly,
They'll notice.
only me; the One who Understands who I am.

If I fell - The Beatles

-that's all. i couldn't explain how I feel that this song matches to me!-

Dev - Dancing Shoes

This video is hilarious and slightly doesn't match with the song. concerning only the song, it's telling about how we feel before we go to perform something. little intermezzo, I study majoring English Literature in UGM, so I get so much things to perform. on my personal thought, this song really reflects what i feel before the show.
Back to the topic, normally every performer will get nervous every time they are going to perform something. Let's see the lyric!
I'm putting on my dancing shoes tonight
Ten thousand people waiting for me
I can hear them outside from the curtain I sit behind
The drums kick in and the lights go down
My heartbeat drowns out the sound
My hands go up, I sing my song
And a thousand voices sing along

I used to lay awake
Hear a crowd roar to every word I say
Now the stars, they used to shine so bright
They were all replaced by candle lights
And it all, makes it harder to find the places that we know

I'm putting on my dancing shoes tonight
Ten thousand people waiting for me
I can hear them outside from the curtain I sit behind
The drums kick in and the lights go down
My heartbeat drowns out the sound
My hands go up, I sing my song
And a thousand voices sing along

Can you hear? Close your eyes
Hearts are racing side-by-side
For you I sing, I sing for you
For you, I wear these dancing shoes
I wear these dancing shoes

Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?

see? it's like you will skimming the audience to find people you know and make sure they watch you. well, the more you perform, the more you can handle your nervous. later on, i will post my performance of reciting the poetry. at that time, i was not even 75% handling my nervous. people said that my voice was trembling. however i was thanking my partners for being perfect performers, so i could hide my trembling.

Indonesia for its People.

so, what's does Indonesia mean for the people? I've interviewed some persons in Jogja to know what they think about their country. Check this one out!

"I'm lost, I'm blind," she cried.
"what makes you feel so? Aren't you rich? So you definitely can do anything you want," I asked, not seriously asked but at least this could make her calm.
"who says so? who says I'm rich?" her cried was getting harder, it made me feeling guilty of making her cry.
"well, your society says so! Your belongings do too" this was the only answer I could say.
"it's all only my appearance. My family, and even me are broke. We have no money, but food. I don't want to tell you that I'm broke. Ashamed!" her cries faded away, she looked sad with empty eyes.
"no! You, poor dear, are totally not broke, I definitely am sure,"
Her big eyes stared at me, just like a hungry bear found its food. "you lie, people lie to make me happy. You are the people, so you lie. You don't know how we are broke, no money, no property, no hope,"
"what about dream? You lie too if you say you don't" I replied her stare.
"I do have, but what can dream do? It cannot bring me money, it's only fantasy for those who totally out of work, those who do nothing but daydreaming. I, who is thought so rich but not, am in high class society."
"wrong. Dreams do money. They give you money."
"how, nana? How! It wouldn't happen in real life!" she started to cry again.
"no dreams are hopeless. They give you hopes, they give you brightness. Your life is dark no more, my dear"
"is it possible to get happy if I don't dream?"
"possible not! Life is started by dreams. You don't dream, means you don't live. You die. You are just a body which should been thrown. Useless. "
"how if I dream but everything is still the same? Poor? Hopeless?"
"life is like you sleep, my dear. You first close your eyes to get your perfect dream. But sometimes you don't always get beautiful dream, it even can be a nightmare which you are scare to. But that's life. You have struggle for it, you will get a very bright life, later at one time. It's like you are awaken from your sleep. You only will see a very bright and beautiful sun!"

Saya mendukung membeli bajakan :D

salam hangat saya buat SBY

I don't know but it is

I just read the tweets from an ustadz. He shared about the force for Moslem to leave Islam. It hurts, for me, it does. Well I just cannot do anything except protect myself, family, and friends. I will never forget to remain me of this thing.
It's out of my expectation. In Islam, there are no force to convert to Moslem, it is all up to you. But why does "they" make it? They make everything worse. Islam never forces them to move. Indonesia is a democracy so why do they force each other?

Hijab and fashion

nowadays, Hijaber is a word for those moslem girls wearing fancy hijabs. it's a special term in Indonesia. they remake the pattern of their veil, so they look so awesome for the trend at that time. but it surely contradicts with the rule of Islam itself. it is clearly stated in Qur’ān Sura 24:31:
"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should NOT display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof (consist of hands and face); that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss."
 what is confusing now?
---> moslem girls/women  should NOT display their beauty and ornaments. get its meaning? it is clearly meaning that girl should not attract any attention as a kind of protection from the bad men, the specific one is the lust.
---> their veils over their bosoms  ????
so every of you should cover your chest. it is also a kind of woman's protection to keep your honor. not to show it to other people. see?

---> draw attention to their hidden ornaments. doesn't it mean, wearing somekind of fancy hijab attracting attention? whoever seeing you wearing fancy one will attract their attention, so you probably become the center of the attention that may lead you to an harassment.

in this writing, i don't mean to limit the creativity of wearing hijab, or whatever it is. but, please be aware of what has been stated in Al Qur'an, the promises of the Al Hakeem. please, girls. never listen to them, if they tease you ugly, cupu (old fashioned), or whatever it is. don't be afraid of having no boyfriend because you don't wear fancy jilbab or hijab or veil. every single step of your life has been determined by the Ar Rahmaan, Ar Rahim.

thank you

childhood #1

"dek Icha, X kenapa ditampar?"
"Muyak sih, mainin rambut saya om" tetap dengan singkatnya aku menjawab.
"sekarang si X ga mau sekolah lagi loh, katanya takut ketemu dek Icha."
tiba-tiba aku jauh merasa bersalah. segitu menyakitkannya kah tamparan seorang anak kecil?
